Trista – The Kirby Family

Trista Relentless Kid
Trista was born a healthy happy little girl; she had no health issues and made all the normal milestones at the appropriate time. She is the youngest of 5 children; her siblings are Chelsea, Brandon, Tyler and Mackayla.

In October 2009 at the age of 2 Trista was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She went through 2 ½ years of chemotherapy, multiple tests and numerous procedures, surgeries and has spent countless nights in the hospital.

This is something a child should never had to endure but Trista fought like a champ and completed her treatment in January 2012.

As years went by, that difficult part of her life and ours became a thing of the past. Life was finally beginning to feel normal again. Trista was able to play outside more, she started taking karate lessons, going to school and spending the night often with family and friends.

Eventually her clinic visits were moved to just once a year, Trista was doing great. The doctors told us that the more years that pass without incident the less chance she would have of a relapse. At that particular point in time, Trista was almost 5 years out and the chances of a relapse were now at 2%.

In May 2016 Trista began not feeling well and was showing physical signs that were concerning to us. She continually had low grade fevers and her gums would occasionally bleed. Trista was much more tired than normal as well. This prompted us to call for an earlier appointment with the oncology clinic.

On May 9, 2016 at the age of 8 ½ Trista relapsed. She has already started her fight again. She is going to be going through another 2 ½ years of chemotherapy. She will also have to endure all of the tests, procedures and surgeries required all over again.

Things will be a lot more intense this time and she will likely spend more nights hospitalized than previously. Trista’s doctors have informed us that the 90% cure rate has lowered to around 60% but we hope that prayer and her willingness to continue to fight raises expectations.

Trista Kirby RDK 2016Trista’s doctors have started her on a treatment trial that uses an antibody as well as chemotherapy in hopes of increasing the cure rate. We have faith that Trista can beat this once again but she has another long and tiring road ahead of her.

Trista enjoys hunting, fishing, riding her bike and four wheeler. She also spends a lot of time swimming, playing with her cousins and enjoying quality time with family. She has a different favorite color every day because she says she likes a lot of colors.

Trista is a very outgoing girl that is guaranteed to make you smile! Please welcome Trista as a RD Kid for 2016 and her family to Relentless Detroit.
